The Myth Of Deregulation In New Zealand

Do you know someone who trots out the “New Zealand has been completely deregulated” meme?

Do you think that “morality and decency” need to be injected back into the marketplace through some more regulatory intervention?

I suggest looking at the reality of regulation in New Zealand in 2013. The facts might shock your impression of a deregulated marketplace running riot.

The Productivity Commission is looking at regulatory institutions and practices.

They have put out an issues paper – and right on Page 2 is an overview of all of those regulatory institutions that let the free market run riot and take away “morality and decency” from the markets they regulate.

Before commenting, take some time and read through the breadth of regulation that New Zealand has in place. Then think about all of the compliance costs. If you still think we’re living in a deregulated free market hellhole, you are another data point against democracy.
