Does Hong Kong Really Need Democracy?

Apparently a lot of people in Hong Kong want democracy and are protesting for it. Do they even know the track record of democracy in the 20th century? Do they really think Hong Kong will continue to be prosperous once democracy ushers in the sorts of policies that a lot of Hong Kong residents I know would find abhorrent?

Time spent in political activity is a sunk cost that can never be recovered. The resources expended in seeking the prize of political baubles are enormous. A lot of people who get worked up and emotional about politics would do well to remember that the outcome of these processes are outside our locus of control. Therefore, doing something else will almost always be a better use of your time.
